All That You Must Know About Autoclave Sterilization Process

For killing various harmful bacteria, fungi, viruses, and spores, one of the most effective methods used is autoclaving. It is an effective method to sterilize the lab equipment, particularly for any liquid handling products.

This process takes the advantage of a certain phenomenon that water or steam boiling point increases if it is done under high pressure. Such type of activity is performed in a certain machine called the Autoclave, where certain high pressure will be applied with a required temperature of 121°C (250°F) for 15 to 20 minutes for sterilizing the equipment.

Essentially autoclaves can take the pressure off from medical staff for the sterilization of different tools and materials and also biomedical waste. The reason for this is that autoclaves use moist heat in the saturated steam form, combined with high temperature and pressure well above 100°C to effectively kill heat-resistant bacteria and reduce any risk of infection spreading both inside and outside the hospital or clinic walls.

In addition, unlike incinerators, which are only used to eliminate garbage, autoclaves allow sterilised medical equipment such as surgical tools to be reused. The following are the ways autoclaves can use temperature and pressure in the favour of sterilization

The premises of steam sterilisation is to expose each medical object inside the closed machine chamber to direct steam contact, this must be done at the correct temperature at sufficiently high pressure, and for a sufficient amount of time.


This means that the process of steam sterilization done by autoclaves will consist of 4 main factors:

  • Temperature

  • Pressure

  • Time

  • Steam


An autoclave clears the entire chamber air and raises the pressure level inside by using a certain powerful vacuum pump. The steam will be able to penetrate and clean the entire surfaces of the load better in this vacuum atmosphere.

An autoclave can raise the water’s boiling point, which here in this case will be the steam that is going to come in contact with the entire load inside the chamber by increasing the pressure inside.

There is no microbe that can withstand the temperature of steam, which currently ranges between 121°C and 134°C, ensuring that your autoclave will eliminate any possibly dangerous foreign particles.

Of course, for the steam sterilisation process to work, this elevated temperature and pressure must be maintained for a set period of time. This normally takes 20 to 30 minutes, depending on the autoclave and the load size within.


The dangers of sanitising hospital equipment incorrectly

Sterilization of various tools in hospitals is critical for patient safety, as failing to meet various safety guidelines can result in progressively severe consequences, which include the following:

1.The spread of infections

If unexplained compounds are found on the hospital equipment or surgical instruments at any moment, they can readily increase the infection risk by exposing specific body areas to germs.

2.The spread of diseases

It is very easy for infection to move from one patient to the other if hospital equipment is not sterilised correctly after using for a different duty. AIDS, HIV, hepatitis, and a slew of other diseases are examples.

3.Mortal danger

Although it may sound dramatic, compromised medical equipment as a result of improper steam sterilisation is not a laughing matter. Patients can die as a result of serious infection in some instances.
